What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan (Computed Tomography), also known as a CAT scan, is an advanced, non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticated computer technology to produce highly detailed, cross-sectional images of the inside of your body.

Unlike a traditional X-ray where structures overlap and obscure each other, a CT scanner features a motorized X-ray tube that rotates around the patient, capturing multiple images from many different angles. A powerful computer then assembles these into detailed cross-sectional views of your internal organs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels, and can even reconstruct them into three-dimensional (3D) images.

This gives doctors a precise view of the shape, size, density, and texture of internal structures, making CT scans essential for diagnosing conditions ranging from head injuries and strokes to cancers, spinal disorders, and abdominal emergencies, often reducing the need for exploratory surgeries. At Kedar CT & MRI Centre, we offer 16+ specialized CT scan types with our state-of-the-art 64-Slice CT scanner, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why 64-Slice CT Changes Everything

Our 64-Slice CT scanner contains 64 rows of high-resolution detectors that simultaneously capture image data as the X-ray tube rotates around you. This means 64 parallel anatomical slices per single rotation, providing dramatically wider coverage, higher resolution, and faster scan times compared to older 16-slice or 32-slice systems.

Kedar CT & MRI Centre is the first and only centre in the Barmer, Jaisalmer, Balotra, and Jalore region to offer this advanced 64-Slice CT technology, bringing metro-level diagnostic precision to Western Rajasthan.

  • Ultra-Fast Scans (entire chest or abdomen in seconds)
  • Sub-millimeter slices (no micro-lesion missed)
  • Cardiac-capable clear coronary artery imaging
  • Smart dose-modulation for lower radiation

How to Prepare for Your CT Scan

Proper preparation ensures the best image quality and a smooth experience. Here is what you need to know before your scan at Kedar CT & MRI Centre:

01

Fasting (If Contrast Is Required)

If your scan involves oral or intravenous (IV) contrast dye, you will typically need to fast for 3 to 4 hours before the scan. Clear liquids like water are usually permitted. For non-contrast scans, fasting is generally not required.

02

Clothing and Metal Objects

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Remove all metal objects including jewellery, eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, and hairpins, as metal creates artifacts that can affect image quality. You may be given a hospital gown to wear during the scan.

03

Inform Our Staff About Your Health

Inform us about any kidney problems or diabetes, asthma, previous allergic reactions to iodine or contrast dye, and any medications you are currently taking. A recent blood test (Creatinine/eGFR) may be required before IV contrast.

04

Pregnancy Screening

If you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy, please inform our technician immediately. CT scans involve X-ray radiation and are only performed on pregnant patients when absolutely medically necessary.

05

Bring Your Documents

Carry your doctor's referral prescription, any previous scan reports or images, and your ID. This helps our radiologists focus the scan on the right clinical question.

What Happens During a CT Scan?

If it is your first CT scan, here is exactly what to expect at our centre:

Step 1

You lie comfortably on a motorized examination table. Our technician positions you carefully and may use cushions or straps to help you remain still during the scan.

Step 2

If contrast dye is required, it is administered through a small IV line in your arm. You may feel a brief, harmless sensation of warmth spreading through your body and a temporary metallic taste, which is completely normal.

Step 3

The table slowly moves through the large, doughnut-shaped CT scanner. It is not a closed tunnel like an MRI, so the opening is wide and patients rarely feel claustrophobic. Our technologist operates the machine from an adjacent room but maintains constant contact with you.

Step 4

You will be asked to remain perfectly still and may hear automated voice instructions to hold your breath for a few seconds. This prevents motion blur and ensures the sharpest images.

Step 5

The actual scan takes only seconds to a few minutes with our 64-Slice scanner. The entire appointment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. After the scan, you can immediately resume normal activities.

CT Scan Safety and Radiation

Patient safety is our highest priority at Kedar CT & MRI Centre. While CT scans do involve ionizing radiation, our modern 64-Slice scanner is equipped with advanced dose-modulation technology that automatically adjusts the radiation to the absolute minimum level needed for diagnostic-quality images.

We strictly follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), which means our technologists customize scanner settings for every patient. The 64-Slice technology itself contributes to lower doses because faster scan speeds mean less total radiation exposure time.

Important: If you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, please inform our staff before the scan.

Diagnostic Benefits

The diagnostic benefits of a properly indicated CT scan far outweigh the minimal radiation risk. CT scans have been used safely in hospitals worldwide for decades and are one of the most critical tools in modern medicine, detecting life-threatening conditions that would otherwise require invasive surgical exploration.

CT Scan vs MRI: Which Do You Need?

Both CT scan and MRI are powerful diagnostic tools, but they work differently and are suited for different conditions. Here is a quick comparison.

A 64-slice CT scanner captures 64 cross-sectional images in a single rotation, compared to 16 or fewer in older machines. This means dramatically faster scans (often just seconds), much sharper and more detailed images, lower radiation doses, and the ability to perform advanced studies like CT Coronary Angiography and 3D reconstructions that are not possible with older scanners. Kedar CT & MRI Centre is the first centre in the Barmer, Jaisalmer, Balotra & Jalore region to offer this technology.

You can immediately resume your normal diet, activities, and medications after the scan. If IV contrast dye was used, drink plenty of water for the next 24 hours to help flush the dye from your system. Mild warmth or metallic taste during contrast injection is normal and temporary. Severe reactions are extremely rare. Our team monitors you throughout the process for your safety.
